Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates is an innovative and safe system of mind-body exercise that evolved from the principles developed by Joseph Pilates and was made popular in recent years by the dance and performing arts community. Using a variety of mat and equipment techniques, Pilates can not only transform the way your body feels, but can also help create a sleek, toned physique without excess bulk.
Should I try Pilates?
No matter your age or physical abilities, Pilates can help improve strength and flexibility. Pilates exercises focus on developing a strong “core” while conditioning the whole body and improving body awareness, posture, and coordination.
While many who suffer from injuries or weaknesses find “traditional” exercise methods difficult, most Pilates exercises are low or no-impact, and are performed in seated or reclined positions. Pilates is so safe, it is often used in conjunction with physical therapy to rehabilitate injuries. At the same time, Pilates techniques can easily be modified to challenge even the most well-conditioned athletes.
Among the many benefits of Pilates are that it increases your strength without “bulking” you up. Pilates doesn’t typically increase your heart rate to an aerobic level, but you may find that strength training with Pilates does help whittle your waistline.
Make sure to talk with your instructor about changes in your body or injuries you may have. Our Pilates instructors are trained to offer modifications if you find techniques uncomfortable. Listen to your body!

Why Pilates at Tyler Physical Therapy?
Tyler Physical Therapy & Pilates is committed to providing a client-centered Pilates experience. In order to give all clients personalized attention, we restrict all group classes to a maximum of 4 people.
All of our instructors have been teaching for a number of years, and several have additional specialized training in Pilates for special conditions including pre-natal and post-partum, breast cancer, arthritis, shoulder dysfunction, pelvis and spine, and more. Several instructors also offer specialized classes for dancers and athletes.
Pilates Classes
All of our group Pilates classes are 55-minutes long and limited to a maximum of 4 participants, unless otherwise noted. Due to small class sizes, clients must reserve space in classes in advance.
Pilates mat classes use padded mats (provided) and may incorporate additional props such as the Magic Circle, foam roller, hand weights, or mini-ball. Pilates mat work builds strength, improves flexibility and enhances coordination:
Intermediate Mat class with props

Basic Mat classes
